About Burning Man
Burning Man is an annual gathering in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, focused on community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. The week-long event culminates in the burning of a large wooden effigy ("The Man") and features elaborate art installations.
History & Origins of Burning Man
Burning Man originated on June 22, 1986, when Larry Harvey and Jerry James built and burned an 8-foot wooden effigy on Baker Beach in San Francisco. The event grew and moved to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada in 1990, where it has been held annually since. What began as a small gathering evolved into a temporary city (Black Rock City) of over 80,000 participants. Burning Man is not a traditional festival but a community-driven experiment based on ten principles including radical self-expression, radical self-reliance, decommodification, and leaving no trace.
