About Veterans Day
Veterans Day is observed on November 11th each year. It honors all who have served in the US Armed Forces. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died in service, Veterans Day celebrates all veterans, living and deceased.
History & Origins of Veterans Day
Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I on November 11, 1918, when an armistice with Germany went into effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919 as the first Armistice Day. In 1938, it became an official federal holiday. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day to honor all American veterans of all wars. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died in service, Veterans Day celebrates all who have served in the U.S. military, whether in wartime or peacetime.
