Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one of the most influential leaders of the American civil rights movement. Born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia, King led nonviolent protests against racial segregation and discrimination. His iconic "I Have a Dream" speech at the 1963 March on Washington remains one of the most powerful speeches in American history. After his assassination on April 4, 1968, a campaign to create a federal holiday in his honor began almost immediately. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed on January 20, 1986. It is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service.
