History & Origins of Cesar Chavez Day
Cesar Chavez Day honors the birthday of Cesar Estrada Chavez (March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993), a civil rights activist and labor leader who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers union) with Dolores Huerta in 1962. Chavez dedicated his life to improving working conditions for farmworkers through nonviolent tactics including strikes, boycotts, and fasts. His most famous campaign, the Delano grape strike and boycott (1965–1970), brought national attention to the plight of agricultural workers. California made his birthday a state holiday in 2000, and President Barack Obama proclaimed March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day in 2014.
